About: Every day, ubiquitous ideas, objects, and movement surround us, and yet can go unnoticed. But if examined these ideas raise our awareness, expands our horizons and let us see the world in a new way. This theme guided the crafting of the three pieces in The Reality Series. Each will use members of the audience either as volunteers, or to propel the work as it unfolds on stage. Also on program are Selections from The Tennis Dances, some not seen since 1999. Plus a tribute to tapper Alfred Desio. More on this to be announced.
"The Shampoo": Company director Louise Reichlin asks the audience, "Who wouldn't mind getting their hair wet?" as hairdresser Lynn Campbell stands by in her black smock near a sink basin ready to simulate a shampoo. A member of the audience receives a hair wash as the dancers explore the feelings of sensuality and energy created through the tactile experience of hair, bubbles and water. The piece brings to consciousness the latent feelings of sensuality, freedom and comfort present in a simple salon shampoo.
"Los(t) Angeles": Although it's technically one city, LA's diverse cultures spawn innumerable perceptions and realities, often dividing the city along multiple lines, as with the recent immigration protests. Dancers recruit audience members to explore modern hip-hop and traditional ethnic dance forms, while others are content to watch. Through this process, the disconnectedness between the cast, the audience members participating and those watching will mirror many of the realities of one of the most diverse cities on Earth.
"Identity": Have you ever received spam email asking you:
to buy the willing wife?
to save a dying man?
to sponsor a queen?
to trust an assassin?
to free a doomed mistress?
to make a deal with an entrepreneur?
to hide money for a soldier?
Director Louise Reichlin was inspired by some of the creative appeals she actually receives, and this work is both a dance and an interactive identity mystery. The audience discovers clues and controls movement themes between shadowy dancers, working together to strip away identities and layers of realities in order to solve the mystery. The piece was developed in collaboration between Reichlin and the dancers with the content humorous, frightening, and touching.
Director is Louise Reichlin. Media collaborator is Carol Gehring. Featured dancers include Karla Hagen, Anaja Holloway, Tamara Kagel, Sung-Yun Park, Stephanie Simpson, Salinee Vanichanan, Teya Wolvington, and Alexandria Yalj. Guest Flamenco artist is Batista Gremaud.
The Reality Series is funded in part by the California Arts Council, a state agency, and the National Endowment for the Arts, a federal agency through a grant called "Creating Public Value". "Dance at the Stone House" performed by Louise Reichlin & Dancers is a site specific work that uses audience participation to design a dance work based on the unusual architecture and art that is the Sun Valley Youth Arts Center with 2 performances at 10:30 am and 12:00 noon. Free admission for general audience but reservations required due to limited seating. Admission fee of $3.00 for participating 4th - 6th grade students. The first segment of The Reality Series, this piece focuses on the unique architecture and children's art that is part of the historic 1925 building that houses the Sun Valley Youth Arts Center.
Built in 1925, the building, designated a City Cultural Historical monument has been transformed into a first-of-its-kind art education center in the East San Fernando Valley, opening its classes to the public less than a year ago. This piece is the first of Reichlin's "The Reality Series", all of which are interactive, where the audience will become more aware of elements around us we often don't notice. Concert parts of this series will follow at Alvas in San Pedro on March 9, 2008, and the Nate Holden PAC on May 10, 2008.
The Dance at the Stone House is an interactive performance project created by the professional dance company working with 60 elementary and middle school students for each performance/workshop. Because of the preservation restriction of only 6 people in each of the inside rooms, small groups of students will filter into each area inside and outside the building and create with a company dancer an original dance freeze or phrase based on the architecture or artwork there. Once they have created their phrases, the students will rotate between two audience areas, one inside The Stone House, and one on the outside lawn. Louise Reichlin & Dancers will then perform a completed work that incorporates the 10 short phrases set to music on a patio area that is visible to both the inside and outside audiences' areas.
Created and narrated by Louise Reichlin, the featured dancers in the performance are Karla Hagen, Anaja Holloway, Rocio Ponce, Salinee Vanichanan, and C. Ivy.

Louise Reichlin & Dancers' Brand performance includes the first look at "The Shampoo". The first work in the new "The Reality Series" Reichlin will examine everyday events and actions that we don't give too much thought to, such as a shampoo, and suddenly we become aware of the sensuality, freedom and comfort present in this simple salon action. Besides the dance and music by Afrocelt Sound System, the piece includes audience involvement that will help shape each performance.
Also on the program are excerpts from a recent joyous work "The Patchwork Girl of Oz - "The choreography used a wonderfully playful approach - the music a delightful surprise..." (The Beverly Hills Outlook). The Los Angeles Times compliments Linda Borough's designs, saying that the "colorful costumes pleased and there was a certain naive quality that grabbed at the heart." In regards to the show's "jubilant dancing," the Times added, "there is a lot going on choreographically to sate a dance lover's appetite." There will also be audience participation in several of the dances.
Louise Reichlin & Dancers burst into the public eye in 1979 with their first performance at the Anson Ford Theatre when "Reichlin created a sensation with "The Tennis Dances" (Dance News). Over the years she has continued to examine our society from its most primitive nature to the emergence of the information age with "The E-mail Dances" in 1996. Through multiple performances for the 23rd Olympiad, a summer series at the LA Zoo, touring the US and Mexico with "Dream Scapes" and "The Patchwork Girl of Oz", Reichlin has consistently created "probing and provocative" works (Dance Magazine)

"THE PATCHWORK GIRL OF OZ" AT THE MADRID THEATRE
After packing houses in four states, Louise Reichlin & Dancers, a performing company of Los Angeles Choreographers & Dancers, returns to the Madrid Theatre in Canoga Park with its critically acclaimed production "The Patchwork Girl of Oz" on Saturday, December 3, 2005, at 2 and 5 pm.
Adapted from the original children's classic by L. Frank Baum, creator of "The Wizard of Oz," this magical, modern-day fable brings to life the adventures of Ojo, as he goes on a quest to bring his uncle, who has been turned into marble, back to life. Along the way he makes new friends, including the marvelously contemporary Patchwork Girl, and learns the importance of working together as part of a community.
The multi-ethnic cast performs ten fantastical dances, woven together with multimedia, music, and narration that help tell the story. Although the original book was written in 1913, its values, emphasizing cooperation, family, friendship, forgiveness, respect for all life and ultimately self-reliance, are still important almost 100 years later.
This show is perfect for parents and children to attend together. While younger viewers will be delighted by the magical world of Oz and Ojo's adventures, adults will find sophisticated dance, music, and multimedia imagery most fulfilling.
Featured dancers in "The Patchwork Girl of Oz" include: Kiyoko Ando, Kelly Gill, Steve Nielsen, Sung-Yun Park, Leah Smiley, Ben Wolff, Teya Wolvington and Kati Zachary. Direction, choreography and narration for the production are by Louise Reichlin. Costumes are by Linda Borough. Richard Wainess created the original media for Part 1. Video artists for Part 2 are Michael Masucci, Videographer, and Shinji Murakoshi, VJ Artist.

Program: The story leads you on a futuristic cyber journey enhanced with multimedia, lush sets, magical illusions, and powerful music. Stunning visuals and riveting choreography make this performance a visual and audible feast. Five aerialists from Cirque Du Soleil perform amazing aerial ballets and a cast of all-stars (featuring members of Supertramp and the famed Rippingtons) converge in concert to weave a dramatic tapestry of music and song. Created by Steve Reid who also writes the music, Choreography is by Louise Reichlin. The productions returns to Los Angeles after a 3 week east coast tour in September. Following the Norris performances, there is a tour to Mexico for 5 performances as part of V Festival Internacional Tamaulipas.

Frank Baum, published in 1913. The piece uniquely meshes dance and technology, with Louise Reichlin writing the adaptation, choreographing and directing, and Richard Wainess of the USC School of Engineering Faculty creating the multimedia sections. The characters, who have extraordinary adventures, have the same concerns as we have today, and we feel connected to them whether they are everyday people or more unusual creatures. - Alfred Desio and Sam Weber traveled to Germany in September/October 2000 for the title roles of two tap dancing brothers in the short film "Two In Tails" (Zwei in Frack) directed by Christian Stahl. Out of work, thrown out of their apartment, they wander the street in this fable still dressed in their dance tuxedos where they are mistaken for relatives in a christening, pallbearers, waiters, and guests at a wedding.

Included is THE FIVE SISTERS, a narrated tale about five girls who decide to leave their familiar garden and explore more of the world. During their travels they meet and become characters in mysterious works The Magician and Folk Dance from Reichlin's Turkish Delights along with the Harem section from the critically acclaimed work The Tennis Dances. All their adventures are woven together in dance and Eastern music. Admission is free with $5 museum entrance fee. Louise Reichlin directs and choreographs the program, which also includes some audience participation. The program will also celebrate the twentieth season of the company and the twentieth birthday of the signature piece of the group, The Tennis Dances with a revival of the complete work.

Louise Reichlin directs and choreographs the company's and the dancework's 20 year anniversary revival of the critically acclaimed work. When first produced in 1979, reviewers said: "Reichlin created a sensation with The Tennis Dances" (Dance News), "The program ended brilliantly, thanks to Reichlin's Tennis Dances, which dates back to 1979. In this ten-part suite the tennis court becomes a metaphor, of course, for life's stage. And life, as Reichlin sees it, is indeed a stage, one crowded with a broad spectrum of attitudes. Here is a choreographer who arguably picks up the feminist point of view where Isadora Duncan and Ruth St. Denis left off. To observe the universe as it is inhabited by women, she harks back to ancient times and mythic symbols." The Lion and the Mermaid is about a young Lion cub named Jose who came to this country when he was very young, and a Mermaid named Allison, who swam to California from Hawaii. Featured on the program is the tale about the adventures and travels of The Woman With One Head If she sounds ordinary, the people she meets are not! An ingenious audience participation piece allows members of the audience to meet the different characters in the dance, and become part of the action. A colorful Eastern Suite called The Five Sisters includes the mysterious works The Magician and Folk Dance from Turkish Delights along with the Harem section from the critically acclaimed work The Tennis Dances.
Alfred Desio joins an all-star faculty to teach at the 8th Annual St. Louis Tap Festival, with a program featuring Savion Glover, Leonard Reed, Henry Letang, Jimmy Slyde, Paul and Arlene Kennedy, Cholly Atkins, Fred Kelly, The Silver Belles, Dianne Walker, Van Porter, Sam Weber, Acia Gray, Yvette Glover, Jo Rowan, Lane Alexander, Jan Feager, Alfred Desio, Pascal Hulin, Six Feet of Rhythm, The Danny Holgate Band, Austin Tap Company, St. Louis Hoofers, Creative Expressions, Ten Foot Five, The Kennedy Tap Company, North Carolina Youth Tap Ensemble with special appearances by Prince Spencer, Maceo Anderson, Al Robinson, and Mickey Carroll. Louise Reichlin & Alfred Desio choreograph "Pops Night at the Movies" for the dancers of Los Angeles Choreographers & Dancers and the Pasadena Pops Orchestra. The dancers will premiere two suites of dances by Reichlin & Desio, whose Broadway and concert backgrounds add exuberance and engaging 30's thru 50's dance imagery to selections from Grease as well as Gershwin melodies which have been featured in films. Touring and Bringing the Arts into the Los Angeles School Curriculum, 2000-2001

Established in 1979, LA C& D has approximately 100 performances and residency activities each season. They range from local school touring to travels across the country. Louise Reichlin & Dancers, the modern dance part of Los Angeles Choreographers & Dancers, has recently been selected for the Kennedy Center Touring Roster. The company is known for many special programs designed for children and families. We returned to Los Feliz Elementary for our fourth project there. The company introduced the dance elements of the new dance standards to all 40 classes. The Los Feliz Project was once again sponsored by the Hollywood Arts Council. Other school activities included curriculum based workshops for students and teachers, as well as performance in a number of "Arts Prototype Schools" in the LA Unified. Other school performances included a "Works in Progress" of the Patchwork Girl before anyone else got to see it at the Buckley School, and a performance on election day at St. James Elementary, where members of every class were wearing "I Voted" stickers.

This has been an exciting and busy time for both Reichlin and Desio. Alfred Desio directed and both choreographed the National Touring version of Caution: Men At Work, TAP for Theatrical Arts International 13 state tour. Louise Reichlin directed and both choreographed HoboTap for the Shick Wilkenson industrial in Connecticut (with Desio, and 6 others from LA performing), and Louise Reichin choreographed the multimedia production DreamScapes written and performed by Steve Reid's Bamboo Forest and six member of Reichlin's company. Last season's and the current touring version (2003-04) includes four dancers. The collaboration began with a video shoot at the Japan American Theater in Los Angeles in February, and in June 2000 their first performance was at Disney World in Orlando for Ortho Biotech. Most recently Reichlin choreographed a television spot for Turkish Radio Television, and Reichlin & Desio directed 3 industrials for Alliance Funding at the Bacara Resort in Santa Barbara, and for Ford Auto for the Taiwan Taipei International Motor Show in Taiwan. Industrials are allowing us to greatly increase funds to our dancers.
